Chapter Twenty

Piper made it to the handover location with plenty of time to spare, pulling the car to a halt just inside the tunnel. She didn’t want to be late, didn’t want to risk making anything worse for her sister. Baxter had Gloria and Piper knew if she didn’t do what he asked, then he’d make good on his threat and Gloria would suffer, then die. She was already tied up in that cell with the other girls.

The Chief Master Sgt. stirred in the chair beside her. Piper reached over, put some more Rohypnol into a bottle of water, and poured a little down the unconscious woman’s throat.

They should have been here by now—the man and the woman with the ski masks—ready to take the new ace. Piper’s replacement. But Baxter said on the phone that Piper had to do more to save her little sister. It wouldn’t be enough to just hand over the new ace: Bree McAvoy.

It was her fault. She’d made the decision to go and see Gloria when she’d been told explicitly not to. But how could she not? She was her sister—the only thing she had left in this world, the only thing left worth fighting for. And now she didn’t even have that. Baxter had Gloria and Piper was on her own, navigating a sadistic game she had no desire to play, but couldn’t refuse. There was no way she could get out of this, no matter what she tried. Baxter had her sister and that was all that mattered.

But it didn’t mean she wouldn’t try. It didn’t mean she wouldn’t work out a way to free Gloria. It didn’t mean she would give up hope. She’d learned that in the Air Force—that giving up hope was the surest way to get yourself killed. But sticking to your guns, hanging in there, and fighting through and trying to resolve any issues you’re facing—that’s the only way to survive. She decided to do that with Gloria. There had to be a way to get her out. What he was demanding ... whatever came next could only be worse than kidnapping Bree MacAvoy.

Another car pulled up in the tunnel. They flashed their lights on and off. Piper hopped out of her hired vehicle and opened the passenger door. The man with the ski mask came forward, pulled Bree MacAvoy out of the passenger seat and placed a hood over her head, the same way he had with Gloria.

“Is she okay? Is my sister alright?” asked Piper. “You’re looking after her? Please, please look after her!”

The man swatted her away. “I can’t tell you anything except the instructions he gave.”

“What are they? I’ll do anything!” said Piper.

He waved a hand signal to the car. The passenger door opened and the woman with the ski mask got out. She walked around to the back of the car and opened the trunk. It was one of those Hummer-style vehicles with a trunk that opened outward rather than up.

She pulled out two quivering bodies.
